Arts diary: Swinton’s film festival heads for China

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

The Ballerina Ballroom of Dreams - Tilda Swinton and Mark Cousins’ heavenly film festival, which was held in Nairn this summer - is to travel to Beijing. Cousins and Swinton will be recreating the festival spirit next March in the famous 798 Quarter, Beijing’s vast area of galleries and studios in a former munitions factory. The idea is to bring a little bit of Inverness-shire to China: audiences will be welcomed “to Nairn at midnight” and the programme will consist largely of Scottish films, including the immortal Powell and Pressburger masterpiece I Know Where I’m Going!, Margaret Tait’s enchanting Portrait of Ga, and the Bill Douglas Trilogy. In Nairn this summer, each screening began with the raising of a banner emblazoned with the words “the state of cinema”; Cousins and Swinton are asking Chinese friends to help them come up with an equivalent pun in Mandarin.
